What survives the trip

STL and PLY and 3MF store geometry and nothing else, so writing into them drops materials by definition rather than by choice. The table says which pairings keep everything.

FBX can be read but not written — three.js ships no exporter for either, so neither appears as a column.

01

The file stays on your machine

No upload step, no temporary bucket, no retention window to read about. Open the network tab and watch it do nothing.

02

Seconds, not minutes

Most models finish in a few seconds. Dense scenes with several texture sets take longer, and a phone will be slower than a laptop because it is your own memory doing the work.

03

Nothing to install

Desktop, tablet or phone, any modern browser. No plugin, no account, no limit on how many files you put through it.

Converter questions

Are my PBR materials preserved?

Between GLB, GLTF, OBJ and USDZ, yes — base colour, metallic, roughness, normal and occlusion all map across. Into STL or PLY they cannot be, because those formats have nowhere to put them.

Is there a size limit?

100 MB per file, which is a limit of browser memory rather than of policy. Very large scenes convert faster if you split them first.

Will this ever cost units?

No. It costs us nothing to run — it runs on your hardware — so there is nothing to charge for. The same is true of the model viewer.

Can I convert a model I did not make here?

Yes, and most people do. The converter has no idea where a file came from and no account is involved; whatever licence already covers that model continues to cover it.

The converter, the viewer and the Gridfinity generator are all free and all run in this tab. See all three.
